Why learning AAPI history matters

Marcy Selander, mom to Asian American adoptees:

“A few years ago, I looked through one of my kids’ U.S. History textbooks and found that there there were only a few sentences TOTAL that mentioned Asians in America at all (a blurb on railroads, and a blurb on the WWII internment camps) And zero mention of any individual names of influential Asian Americans. We found some other resources here and there to supplement what they were (not) learning in school, but never anything cohesive. Your work is greatly needed!!”

What people are saying about Streams

Juju Lien, Former Executive Director of the Asian American Institute, Chicago

“Any contemporary history curriculum must reflect the fact that American is a multicultural country, so that American children of all ethnicities can trace their roots in American history. This is critical in affirming childrens’ development of self-identity. We applaud Streams for their enormous accomplishment in developing a history curriculum supplement that correctly reflects the role of Chinese Americans in our history.”

Resilient Panda’s Streams guides are perfect for…

  • Kids in 1st-6th grades (The Korean American guide has extensions for older students, and both have picture books perfect for preschool!)

  • Homeschoolers looking for a living books-based curriculum supplement to complement and add diversity to American history studies.

  • Families with Chinese and/or Korean heritage themselves or among loved ones.

  • Busy parents of kids in school who want to present a cohesive understanding of Chinese and Korean American history to supplement what they learn in school.

  • Kids who already are required to read books, - just make some of them about the story of Chinese and Koreans in America!

  • Summer enrichment or Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month.

  • Any parents who want to learn Chinese and Korean American history with their children!

Streams guides contain…

  • Lesson plans for 9 weeks (Streams: Chinese) or 5 weeks (Streams: Korean) of short lessons that guide parents through what books to borrow or buy and links to short, interesting videos and a timeline for kids to make themselves. Supplemental materials each week could make these lessons last at least 18 or 10 weeks, depending on the guide.

  • A curated list of picture books put in context and chronological order for a cohesive overview of Chinese/Korean American history.

  • Poems by Chinese and Korean American poets that illuminate Chinese American history, culture and experience. Streams: Chinese also includes suggested discussion questions and cultural background notes for historic poems carved in the walls at Angel Island Immigration Station.

  • A timeline kids populate with key people and events to cement the learning in their minds.

  • Extra suggested picture books and videos to go deeper into culture and heritage, and to have some fun books with Chinese or Korean Americans people just doing regular things - because kids need that! These books also fill-in the lessons for kids in grades 1-3 who might not be ready for some of the other content.

  • Streams: Chinese also includes a historical fiction chapter book by a two-time Newbery Honor winning author writing based on his own family’s story.
